Apeirogon mccann5/30/2023 It finally flew away to great cheers from the crowd. It first perched on Petit’s head, then on the end of his balancing bar. When freed from a pocket in his billowing costume while he was midway across the valley, the bird would not fly away. In the middle of the wire, he intended to release a white dove-a pigeon really-as a symbol of peace. Petit sought to unite Israel and Palestine for a moment by his performance. Petit appears in Apeirogon as well, walking out over the Hinnom Valley in Jerusalem in May 1987. The feather will remind Petit of his own creaturely fragility, the consequence of his fall should he make a mistake. As Philippe Petit-himself spritely and birdlike-approaches the towers to survey the area before his daring tightrope walk between them, the woman hands him a feather from a black-throated warbler. In a core section of Let the Great World Spin, McCann’s National Book Award-winning novel set in New York in 1974, a woman shown circling the base of one of the Twin Towers and picking up the corpses of small birds who, dazed by the lights of the towers, had crashed headlong into them.

As Kelly Hurley notes, the Gothic is "a cyclical genre that reemerges in times of cultural stress in order to negotiate anxieties for its readership by working through them in displaced (sometimes supernaturalized) form" (194). As such, its application in contemporary literature to anxieties around environmental problems can be seen as a logical evolution. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Gothic aesthetic gave voice to societal fears about industrial and technological changes (Del Principe 2). In its origins in the eighteenth century, 6 Gothic literature deployed horror, the supernatural, the irrational, and especially the ineffable to manifest a lack of confidence in the pretensions of the Enlightenment's ability to explain the world through reason and logic. The catastrophic consequences of the abuse of pesticides become obvious and urgent in Distancia de rescate, thanks to Gothic fiction's ability to give form to invisible threats (Haber 2). This chapter explores Schweblin's engagement with Gothic fiction in Distancia de rescate to resolve the difficulties of representing agrochemical pollution and, at the same time, to criticize the tendency to privilege the visible and the immediate, which makes the silent and hidden damage of slow violence easier to ignore.

Discworld the color of magic5/30/2023 This first story focuses on failed wizard Rincewind, he was expelled from the wizard school - Unseen University - for accidentally breaking in and stealing one of the great eight spells. It's daft and the writing is a little haphazard but I love that about it. The humour is very similar, a little more absurd perhaps and it's brilliant. I know other people have said this, but it really is just like Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy but fantasy. They're funny! I laughed out loud so often reading this. This is the first Discworld book and the first one I've ever read. I guess I was just in the right headspace for Discworld! so some of my memory I a bit hazy! I'm glad that I did pick it up again because once I did I couldn't put it down, and I really enjoyed it. While I was on holiday I decided to finish it off, this means that the first 65% I read about nine months before I the rest of it. It wasn't that I disliked it, I just wasn't in the right frame of mind of reading it. When I first started reading it last year I just wasn't really feeling it. It took me a long time to finish this book.

Innocent traitor by alison weir5/30/2023 Unabashedly honest and exceptionally intelligent, Jane possesses a sound strength of character beyond her years that equips her to weather the vicious storm. With the premature passing of Jane’ s adolescent cousin, and Henry’s successor, King Edward VI, comes a struggle for supremacy fueled by political machinations and lethal religious fervor. The child of a scheming father and a ruthless mother, for whom she is merely a pawn in a dynastic game with the highest stakes, Jane Grey was born during the harrowingly turbulent period between Anne Boleyn’s beheading and the demise of Jane’s infamous great-uncle, King Henry VIII. It is the story of Lady Jane Grey–“the Nine Days’ Queen”-a fifteen-year-old girl who unwittingly finds herself at the center of the religious and civil unrest that nearly toppled the fabled House of Tudor during the sixteenth century. Historical expertise marries page-turning fiction in Alison Weir’s enthralling debut novel, breathing new life into one of the most significant and tumultuous periods of the English monarchy. I am to die when I have hardly begun to live. historical fiction game.”- The Independent Weir shows skill at plotting and maintaining tension, and she is clearly going to be a major player in the.

From marinated carrot sticks to sweet-and-sour tuna steaks, Trapani style, to tortellini with fish stuffing and polenta shortcake with raisins, dried figs and pine nuts, the outstanding recipes-many of them poetically simple-are too numerous to do justice to in few words. As Hazan puts it, the book ``is meant to be used as a kitchen handbook. In the language of cookbooks, the word ``classic'' is bandied about nearly as frequently as the terms ``low-fat'' and ``no-cholesterol.'' In this case, however, the estimable Hazan ( More Classic Italian Cooking ) does indeed contribute a classic to the ever-increasing literature of Italian cuisine.

Regeneration paul hawken review5/29/2023 Paul Hawken’s latest book Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation is a powerful catalyst to action, and creates a call to move urgently, together, towards rapid change. In spite of overwhelming agreement about global warming, that moment has yet to arrive. In times of crisis, a moment often arises when unity of purpose changes the course of events. We also hear voices who say that it is too late, that we need to be planning and pivoting in response to the inevitable and horrific changes to our planet rather than trying to avert the worst consequences. The voices of civil society, governments, business, the military, the financial world, and faith communities unite in expressing their deep concern, even if some have only recently (and sometimes begrudgingly) acknowledged it. Climate is no longer an issue that can be pushed down the road. Every day, one reads of new records set in any number of important markers: CO2 levels, heat and precipitation, loss of Arctic ice and permafrost, and increase in deforestation, to name just a few symptoms. 2021 is a watershed moment because that future is now upon us. From the introduction of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring in 1962, to the Paris Agreement of 2015, and even up to the present day, we have seen a steady stream of publications, conferences, and pacts committing to supporting the climate by reversing the direction of global warming with steps to be taken in the foreseeable future.

The Xena Scrolls by Ru Emerson5/29/2023 Ever wondered what stuntees do? Or how to pronounce Ngila Dickson? How about casting Kiwis? Insider information that I hadn't heard before had me rushing back to my tape of Sins of the Past to spot Rob Tapert in the staff fight and the production staff being walked on by Xena! Most Xena fans know the Lucy-was-a-goldminer story, or the acting background of Renée O'Connor well enough, but there is so much original information here, I am sure fans will be well pleased. For many of us, the behind the scenes section is the most interesting as author Weisbrot clearly had the opportunity to talk to all of those names that flash past before the witty disclaimer. The book is divided into sections the origins of the series, a facinating behind the scenes look, cast profiles, a look at tv heroines, and an episode guide. (Her comments range from the insightful to the frivolous, but it is a real scoop.) OK, so the episode guide only covers seasons one and two and isn't that in depth, but each episode has Lucy Lawless' own view of it. My highest recommendation to this very good book that even hardened Xena fans will enjoy. Guides The Official Guide to the Xenaverseīy Robert Weisbrot Doubleday Books 1998. |
